There are candles of copper or the insomnia, there are candles gave the need or the streets ... are white candles are lit Avisma which only a century ,.... Almea are candles which you speak. One of the young exponents of Cuban plastic arts is the Camagüey Bulté Damian Hidalgo, born in 1971. This painter, who lives in Havana, has a strong academic background, with studies completed at the National Arts School Paulita Concepción and San Alejandro Academy, in whose classrooms consolidated his vocation between 1996 and 2000. Hidalgo Bulté shows markedly symbolist nature of his art, through which, in addition to a variety of ways to recreate his overview as a painter, is often a critical intelligent and evocative of the surrounding reality. In carrying out that objective appreciably emphasizes the performance figurative and detailed bill, often in several formats. This artist's brush appears laborious and constant operator, as evidenced by their curriculum vitae, which reveals its participation in personal and twenty-eight group exhibitions, among the latter some made in Spain, Mexico and the United States, countries and private collections have parts of his own. Two of his most recent solo exhibitions "The Age of Sails, in Room Martínez Villena, of the Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba, in 2007, and RE-SAIL-TION, Gallery Pierre A. Renoir, the French Union of Cuba, in 2008, two similar projects in parts I and II, showed the public two peculiar features present in the exhibits: the use of newsprint and the use of candles, both for human bodies set up to accompany various figures and objects. Hidalgo hit in these works Bulté newsprint on the canvas that will work, what makes this a peculiar texture and allows the artist to let the vision come to contemplate the work of what the artist wants to intentionally carrying an additional message to the painting itself. That role, consistency easily manipulated to the operator, allows you to transmit a message today on national issues. The newspaper, processed oil and mixed media, becomes an interplay that the viewer can see through natural and circumstantial issues, with results clearly recognizable and decodificadles. This collage of newspaper, fabric and rich colors Conceptually the project and allows the painter, for several years, using it as an excuse to model human insert, poses, still lifes and objects in a wide range. The other elements present in these works is the candle as an object that shapes the characters and various articles in the composition, made this bold colors, with imitation of rusted or corroded, often with shades, tints and glazes pastel and faded. The painter is presented in these works as an observer concerned about their environment. The use of candles, integrated human figures and objects, can have multiple readings, as they, themselves, have different uses and represent both life and death, they live and die as light up when the fire ends up eating. The candle allows us to counter the darkness, is used for religious purposes and may also illuminate a romantic dinner, but it is ephemeral, like humans, and usually gives way to melt the most suggestive ways. The author has told this writer that the need to resort to the dim light of candles to continue painting for the intermittent power outages that are experienced in Havana, encouraged him to meditate upon them and bring them to the canvas in his multiple meaning. The use of newsprint on the canvas as an expressive painter lets treat this information daily in correspondence with the nature and intent of the work, thus achieving a higher density in the message that it intends to convey. Your installation of a dining table covered entirely of newspaper, recently presented at the Biennial of Sculpture and Installation, in the gallery Teodoro Ramos Blanco, Cerro, is a powerful symbolic simulation reinterprets the everyday reality of the island with a strong emotional charge. The overlaps with the newspapers, which previously have been applied over a wash technique, suggest a table rather than be used when receiving food, superlative acts as a supplier of ideology and political struggle to replace those. Drew the attention of these many figures, whose bones have been changed by candles, showing in some parts of their bodies about as metal fragments covering members, as if it were corselets, greaves and other elements of ancient armor but also bear a curious resemblance to pieces of the unfinished prosthesis, as if a mysterious demiurge had done hard work to build golems, robotic beings, without will, inflexibility bodies tragic contrast to the ductility of the wax. Metal and wax: Man divided in their dual creative essence and robotics, a dichotomy civilization / domestication that tears the human soul locked in a land surrounded by the sea. This is the imaginative world of Damian Hidalgo Bulte, whose continuing work and artistic quality invite us to stay attentive to their work. Mr. Oscar Ferrer, journalist and author, Havana, October 2008.
